Fall 2009 - Game 8
A Game Like No Other

Previous Matches v BRDW Lynx
10/5/2008 Avalanche 2 - BRDW Lynx 1
Yes, it's true. As the Avalanche assembled on the field for their final match of the Fall 2009 season you could count seventeen girls in light blue. What's the big deal? Well, for the first time all season, we had every player healthy enough to play and ready to go. Not one other time had all of the pieces of the puzzle been there. This was additionally remarkable since we had to drive almost two hours to get to the game field.

In the pre-game meeting we said, "let's see if we can put a complete game together from start to finish." Lo and behold, that's almost exactly what happened as the Avalanche scored a huge season-ending win over a tough BRDW Lynx team.

The first ten minutes and the last five minutes of the game were the stressful ones. All of the minutes in between were dominated by our girls in the net, in the front, in the back, and in the middle. Brilliant keeper play and opportunistic scoring gave the Avalanche their first two-goal lead of the season and a chance to finally take some pressure off the back four. Although the Lynx made it a game late, we held on for the final few minutes, won the match 2-1, and perhaps built some much-needed momentum for the spring season.

Each member of the team contributed this win, and each deserves her own accolades:

Sammy: wanted it so bad that it took 2-3 defenders at a time to keep her from scoring. She doesn't know it yet, but truly great players occupy their opponents and free up their teammates to do great things.

Ashley: wanted it bad and was racing all over the field to make last second stops. She played physical and hard and set an example for her teammates.

Holly: grew by about three inches as she narrowly missed an opportunity to head one in for goal.

Anna: calmly and confidently knocked in a penalty kick to give us only our second lead of the season..

Taylor: made a beautiful 2nd half break-away that narrowly missed going in. Tay continued to make the most of her abilities as she has done all season.

Shelby: continued to develop into a dependable defender and more than once cleared the ball using her head--something that really helped the 1st half defense get out of jams.

Dana: made good, smart, fast, tough decisions and hustled like crazy..

Emily: again demonstrated that she can control the center of the field and make good passes forward. She played a huge part in the game-winning goal.

Jennie: played smart and fast and limited the times that the Lynx got behind the defense..

Tyla: absolutely crushed a 2nd half shot that would have put the game out of reach had it gone in, and she repeatedly made solid stops centrally.

Goose: played courageously on a bad ankle and never once gave up.

Allyson: went as hard as she could go every second of the time she was on the field, and she sparked her team on during a slight lull in the 2nd half.

Kaitlyn: this could have been a blow-out for the Lynx had she not played so well early. Every decision she made was spot on and timed just right.

Alyssa: had another solid game at midfield--which is fast becoming her true position.

Steph: calmly and quietly scored the game-winning goal once again.

Caris: used her speed and hustle to prevent the Lynx midfield from controlling the game.

Emma: played forward, midfield, and defense all in the same game. She is one of the few players who can do that, and she did it especially well this time.

Think snow!
